Ben E. King murió el jueves [30 DE ABRIL] en su casa de New Jersey, por “causas naturales”, a los 
76 años. De nombre completo Benjamin Earl King, el cantante había nacido en Henderson (Carolina del Norte) en 1938, aunque desarrolló lo esencial de su carrera en Nueva York.
Formado musicalmente en la iglesia, King sobrevivió a una época en la que se consideraba que los cantantes eran reemplazables: su grupo, The Five Crowns, se convirtió en 1958 en The Drifters. No fue por arte de magia: con vocalistas como Clyde McPhatter o Johnny Moore, los Drifters habían acumulado abundantes éxitos para Atlantic Records pero el nombre era propiedad de George Treadwell, un músico reciclado en mánager despiadado que pagaba una miseria a los cantantes y les despedía cuando protestaban. De hecho, Treadwell consideraba a los Drifters como una franquicia; tenía varias formaciones actuando por diferentes zonas.
Felizmente para King y sus Drifters, su faceta discográfica recaló en el ambicioso equipo de productores formado por Jerry Leiber y Mike Stoller, que se saltaron las limitaciones presupuestarias impuestas por Atlantic para grabar suntuosas piezas orquestales, como There Goes My Baby (1959) o Save the Last Dance For Me (1960).
